about

The idea for 'The Fall and Fall of England' came about over the winter of 2010/11 through a growing disillusionment with the Coalition and the way they were governing the country. It just seemed like a muddle of half-baked thinking, paper thin policies and complete reversal of ideas and promises, conveniently pushed aside in the pursuit of power. This is a Government without charisma, without inspiration and led by faceless public schoolboys who do not have the faculty to understand the morass of problems facing this country at the bottom end of the spectrum. We sat talking about this and how we saw it all panning out over the next few years and the consensus was bleak, it is all going to end in tears. So we talked some more and inspired by Deltron's 3030 we set about putting together a concept collection of songs that would chart the fall of England - well Britain but England, being English, is more evocative for us - under the Coalition. We started to write from the perspective of pre-election Britain, a sense that Labour was losing it's grip but with no viable alternative in sight and the confusion of choice because they were all saying similar things. From that into a scenario where no obvious winner was emerging and that we faced a coalition government with the strange prospect of the Lib Dems holding the keys and creating a hideous mix of compromise and u-turns as they fell into bed with the Tories. This confounded 'Neu Politics' that was wispy and without substance and a hasty hash-up of policies with a bitter taste for all those that voted Lib-Dem specifically to keep the Tories out of power. From this weird honeymoon of a Frankenstein's wedding we went into an Autumn of discontent when the students made their protest. That was the point where we started writing so we chartered history but then had to plot the future and this is what we saw. A growing social discontent against Government cuts, a world where the arts are hacked away by suspicious philistinic Old Etonians and where spending is butchered and held back from where it is most needed. Expressions of anger against the Government and the Police turning into full blown rioting that eventually gets out of control until the streets are truly lawless, where power fails and where families go hungry. And yeah where the looters are rife. Unchecked we saw a country descend into anarchy, into true breakdown and left at the point where the world is looking on as England burns and sinks into the sea. It's a bleak prognosis for sure but we end the 'album' on a two part track that starts out as an aggressive punkish swipe to shove the debris clear segueing into a more reflective spaced out epitaph that suggests the dust is settling and maybe people can rise again and sort things out for themselves without some soundbiting oaf in an expensive suit talking down to them. We tell the story through the eyes of two citizens – Bobby, a pensioner who has witnessed the changes in society through a lifetime and an unnamed youth who is caught up in the mayhem, and is confused by his anger against the system and the utter destruction going on around him. Musically, the soundscape is reflective of a lifetime of influences – hip hop, dub, dance, punk etc. The music best designed to create an angular take on the grime under the veneer that is Coalition England.

The Fall and Fall are Adam Yates and Paul Turner. Adam does the production, sorts out the beats, creates tunes and backing tracks. Paul does the vocals, plays most of the instruments which are predominantly guitar, bass and keyboards. Sometimes they demo stuff separately and then work up the end result but equally stuff is created from scratch as ideas get developed in the studio. ... more
